Dry, burning, irritated eyes can make work, driving, screen time, and everyday activities uncomfortable. If eye drops and at-home treatments are no longer providing enough relief, Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, may be worth considering. At Clear View Vision Center, we offer IPL dry eye therapy for appropriate patients in Utah County who are dealing with chronic dry eye symptoms, particularly those related to meibomian gland dysfunction.
Many cases of dry eye are caused by evaporative dry eye. This happens when the meibomian glands along the eyelids do not release enough healthy oil into the tear film. Without a strong oil layer, tears evaporate too quickly.
IPL uses controlled pulses of light around the eye area to help reduce inflammation and improve meibomian gland function. By supporting healthier oil flow, IPL can improve tear quality and help reduce symptoms such as burning, redness, grittiness, and fluctuating vision.
IPL can be especially helpful for patients whose dry eye is connected to inflammation or poorly functioning meibomian glands. You may be a candidate if you experience:
Persistent burning, dryness, redness, or gritty sensations
Watery eyes caused by an unstable tear film
Blurry or fluctuating vision that improves after blinking
Dry eye symptoms that have not improved enough with artificial tears
Meibomian gland dysfunction or evaporative dry eye
Recurring symptoms triggered by Utah's dry climate, wind, heating, or air conditioning
A dry eye evaluation is important because IPL is not the right treatment for every type of dry eye.
Yes. Because IPL uses light energy, skin pigmentation, recent sun exposure, certain medications, and other health factors can affect whether treatment is appropriate. We evaluate your skin type, medical history, medications, and eye health before recommending IPL.
Recent tanning or sunburn may increase the risk of skin irritation, and some medications can increase sensitivity to light. Treatment settings can also need to be adjusted based on skin tone.
Dry eye treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Our dry eye management program begins with an evaluation to identify what is contributing to your symptoms. Depending on your needs, treatment may include lubricating drops, warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, NuLids Pro, punctal plugs, amniotic membrane therapy, IPL, or a combination of approaches.
The goal is to treat the underlying cause whenever possible instead of relying only on temporary symptom relief.
If dry eye symptoms are affecting your comfort, we can evaluate your tear film, eyelid health, and contributing factors to determine whether IPL dry eye therapy belongs in your treatment plan.
